On-Screen Map Legends Added

A graphic legend is now shown on-screen while you are creating maps in the Create Maps section of the website. The legend is dynamically updated as layers are added and removed.

Changes to Authentication System

Can't Stay Logged In?

Users at some sites are having trouble remaining logged in to the wildfire site. This is happening at sites where security policies block the "cookies" that are passed between our site and your web browser to manage password access.

In response to these reports, we have moved to a different type of cookie that is less likely to be wiped out by your security settings. For the technically inclined, I've moved from persistent cookies to non-persistent cookies (also known as session cookies).

What It Means To You

If you had no trouble with unexpected logouts previously, you will probably not notice the change at all. If you were previously frequently returned to the home page and prompted to log in, you may find that you can now remain logged in. If you are still unable to stay logged in, please let us know.

Revised Address Mapping

We have improved the way our rural address layers are displayed. Rural addresses have been provided by participating shires in several different ways, including point GPS locations for driveway entries, lines mapping the driveway length, and polygons marking the entire parcel.

We have updated our web map to display these different addressing data sets in a more consistent manner.

Feeds Added for Hotspot and Fire Scar Layers

We have added feeds for two new layers derived from the MODIS satellite. These layers are updated automatically when new data becomes available.

Recent Sentinel Hotspots

This layer shows hotspots identified by the Sentinel project, derived from MODIS satellite data. The layer shows thermal hotspots in three time classes: today, yesterday and 2-7 days ago. This data is updated from Geoscience Australia daily at 6am, 10am, 2pm and 6pm.

2007 Fire Scars

Fire scar data from the Northern Australian Fire Information website is now available in the "Fire Scars" section. This data is hand-mapped from satellite images and posted by NAFI approximately weekly.
