Changes to Default Map Configuration

With the improved map generation speed of the new server we have turned on high-quality water layers by default, replacing our fast-but-ugly simplified coastline.

Also, in response to user feedback we no longer have urban and rural fire district boundaries turned on by default.

NAFI 2008 Fire scar layer added

Courtesy of the good folks at the Northern Australian Fire Information website we have added a new layer for 2008 fire scar data.

You may be interested to know how these layers are generated. Here is the description from the NAFI website:

The fire scar maps on the NAFI site are produced from satellite imagery on a periodic basis. Images are analysed, fire scars identified, and maps compiled with the month of the fire scar recorded as an attribute. This process uses several highly specialised digital image processing and GIS software applications. The fire scar maps are updated approximately every 8 days the period being dictated by the availability of suitable imagery. Note that the extent of the fire scar analysis is not the same in each year as it has been extended on an annual basis.

New Fire District Maps Added

We have made available 8 additional brigade district maps from the original 2005 Atherton Tablelands Wildfire Mitigation Project. The areas covered by these maps were not included in the 2007 map series. The maps are:

  • Arriga Rural Fire District - South (A0)
  • Beatrice River and Maalan Rural Fire Districts (A0)
  • Biboohra Rural Fire District (A0)
  • Mt Carbine and Mary Farms Rural Fire Districts - East(A0)
  • Mt Carbine and Mary Farms Rural Fire Districts - West (A0)
  • Springmount Rural Fire District (A0)
  • Upper Silver Valley Rural Fire District (A0)

New Map Bookmarking Feature

It is now possible to save a map configuration as a web link. When you return to the link, the map will be restored with the same extent, zoom level, and layer selections as the original. This provides a simple way to store and share frequently used maps.

Creating A Link

Go to Create Maps, set up your map, and click on the LINK icon at the bottom of the page. The web link for this map will be displayed below the icon.

For example, the following link will take you to a map showing the last week's hotspot activity in the region inland from Cairns:
http://wildfire.atgis.com.au/maps/?k=27,28,1,3,22,21,12&l=22,21,12&x=144.57458&y=-17.28246&z=8

Using A Map Link

You can use map links in a variety of ways:
  • Cut and paste the link into email,
  • Right-click on the link and add it to your bookmarks,
  • Simply click on the link to revert that saved map configuration.

Login Required

Due to data licensing restrictions, the mapping tools on the wildfire site are only available to authorised users. If you send a map link to someone, they will be required to login before they can view the map.
