How do I create a map?

Getting Started

The steps to creating a map are:

  1. Select Create Maps from the menu,
  2. Use the zoom and pan controls to locate the area of interest,
  3. Select the data layers you want to display,
  4. Fine tune map position,
  5. Print the map.

Locate the area of interest

You can position the map using either the control buttons in the upper left, as shown in the illustration here. Alternatively you can simply click and drag the map to pan. The centre button resets the map to the original scale and starting point.

Map scale is controlled by the zoom slider in the control group. Drag the slider up to zoom in, down to zoom out.

Select Data Layers

The list of available layers is displayed down the left side of the map.

Layer Groups

Layers are arranged into groups, and each group can be rolled up to save space. Click the plus icon at the left of the group names to view the the group layers. Click the minus icon to roll it back up again.

Selecting Layers

Layers are enabled if the tick box shows a tick. Click on the tick box to turn the layer on or off.

Labeling Layers

Most layers have text associated with their data. That text can be turned on or off by clicking on the T icon. The T turns blue if labeling is on. Layers with no T icon do not have label data.

Printing

This system generates printable Adobe PDF files. When you have your map layout finalised, click on the PDF icon at the bottom of the map page to generate a PDF file. Map generation may take some time for complex maps, so be patient. Currently the system generate A4 portrait maps. Let us know if you would like support for other sizes.

You must have Adobe Reader installed to view and print the PDF document. If you do not have Adobe Reader, click the icon to the right to download Adobe Reader.
