Welcome to the Northern Queensland Wildfire Mitigation Project

The Northern Queensland Wildfire Mitigation Project is a collaborative interagency mapping exercise funded by all three levels of government through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government’s Natural Disaster Mitigation Program which aims to decrease or eliminate the impact of natural disasters on society and the environment.

How to use this site

There are no charges or fees for using this service. However, due to data licensing restrictions, access to mapping products is restricted to approved stake holders. Approved agencies include rural and urban fire brigade units, emergency services and local government offices. If you wish to apply for access, please complete the application form.

Resources

Download fire-related GIS datasets and information relating to wildfire management.

Download Maps

The Rural Fire Brigade Resource Mapping strand of this project has produced 90+ fire district maps in A0 and A3 size. PDF's and JPG's of these maps are available for download.

Create and Print Maps

Use the Create Maps feature of this website to create and print custom maps. Available mapping layers include:

  • Fire fighting features (fire breaks, reservoirs, hydrants, etc)
  • Roads, property boundaries, rural addresses,
  • Wildfire hazard ratings,
  • Fire district boundaries,
  • Historical fire scar data,
  • Current hotspot data,
  • 50m contours,
  • 1:100,000 topographic map data
  • Satellite and aerial imagery

Exchange Data

Submit updates directly to the data warehouse using the file exchange facility.

Online Mapping

Create new spatial data sets by digitizing them directly online. Information that you digitize can be saved for your own use, or published, for sharing with other stakeholders.

New Endeavour River Imagery

We have added new 20cm 2008 imagery of the Endeavour Valley area inland from Cooktown. If you are logged in, you can see it here.

Network Upgrade Complete

We have moved the wildfire server to a new home on a fast network, and things are looking good. You should notice a big improvement in performance.

2008 Imagery Over Wet Tropics Now Available

We are pleased to announce the arrival of new 0.5m pixel imagery collected over the Wet Tropics World Heritage area in August 2008. Once you are logged in, you can follow this link to sample the new imagery.

New Imagery and Topo Maps Available

We added the following new raster layers on 9/9/2008. Note you must be logged in to view the examples.

  • 2004 High-resolution imagery over towns in the former Mareeba Shire (Example)
  • 2006 High-resolution imagery over Hinchenbrook Shire courtesy of HRIC (Example)
  • A better landsat7 mosaic (replacing the old LS7 mosiac) (Example)
  • Topo maps at 1:250K, 1:1M, and 1:5M (Example)
